Cavatina Singers is a four-part choir of about 40 voices from Penarth in south Wales. It was founded in 1983 by the late Hilda Morgan, an accomplished local musician. The present Musical Director is Dr Anthony Edwards who has been with the choir since 2001, and the choir’s accompanist is Evelyn Careless ARCO, organist of Trinity Methodist Church, Penarth.
The choir gives a number of concerts in the locality each year in venues such as St Augustine’s, All Saints’ and Trinity Methodist churches. These are usually in aid of a charitable cause; recent events have supported Cancer Research Wales, Leukaemia Research, the Rotary Club of Cardiff Breakfast and Elfed Avenue United Church. The choir regularly sings at the RNLI’s carol service. The occasional shorter recital, such as singing at midday on the stage in the foyer of the Wales Millennium Centre, and other Christmas concerts complete the programme.
The repertoire is wide-ranging, from early music to modern, from sacred to secular, and much of it is sung a capella. Recent concerts have included Tudor motets, madrigals, shorter classical works such as Haydn’s Te Deum, arrangements of popular and folk songs, partsongs, and sacred anthems including works by John Rutter.
Choir rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings in term time from7.30 to 9.30 pm in Albert Road School in Penarth.
A warm welcome awaits prospective members. If you would like further information, please e-mail the Chairman using the link below. Full membership of the choir is by audition with the Musical Director and a membership subscription is payable.
